What is a Skills Gap Analysis?

A skills gap analysis compares your current skills against the requirements of a target role to identify what you already have, what's missing, and what to prioritise learning. It's one of the most practical tools for career planning and job application strategy — showing you exactly where to focus your time before you apply.

How this tool works

Paste your skills (comma-separated, one per line, or your whole resume) and a job description. The tool extracts the key requirements from the job description and checks which ones appear in your profile. Skills are classified as: skills you have (matched), skills gap (missing from your profile), and bonus skills (you have them but the JD doesn't mention them).

What to do with the skills gap

• High-frequency gaps — these are likely hard requirements. Close them before applying if possible.
• Low-frequency gaps — these may be nice-to-haves. You can often still apply and mention you're learning them.
• Bonus skills — mention these in your cover letter or interview as differentiators, even if the JD doesn't ask for them.
• If your match rate is below 50%, you may want to target a different role or invest more time building the core skills first.
• If your match rate is 70%+, you're a strong candidate — focus on tailoring your resume language to the specific JD wording.
